Small Wins: My First SQL Query That Made Sense

Today, I ran my first SQL query that made complete sense. It wasn’t fancy, just selecting a few columns from a dataset and filtering for a certain value, but it worked exactly as intended.

That little “yes!” moment reminded me of when a patient’s INR finally comes into range after days of adjustments.

Right now, I’m practicing on general datasets, but I can imagine this skill applied in pharmacy:

  • Listing all patients currently prescribed a narrow therapeutic index drug, i.e vancomycin.
  • Checking for missing lab data before making dosing recommendations.
  • Creating quick overviews for stewardship or medication safety meetings.

The query itself may have been simple, but it’s the first step toward something bigger.
