Combining SQL Aggregate Functions for Deeper Clinical Analysis

While each aggregate function (COUNT, AVG, MIN, MAX) is useful on its own, combining them can give a more complete clinical picture.

Example: Summarize vancomycin use:

SELECT
COUNT(*) AS TotalOrders,
AVG(DurationDays) AS AvgDuration,
MIN(StartDate) AS FirstOrder,
MAX(EndDate) AS LastOrder
FROM MedOrders
WHERE DrugName = 'Vancomycin';

Practical idea:

  • Combine aggregates to report both volume and timing of a treatment.
  • Track min/max lab values alongside counts for trend monitoring.

It’s an early step toward building full dashboards from SQL queries.
